What Is a Thorough Examination?

A thorough examination is a statutory requirement under the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER). Think of it as your forklift's MOT — a detailed safety inspection carried out by a competent person.

Unlike a service, which focuses on mechanical upkeep, a thorough examination assesses every safety-critical component: the mast, chains, forks, tyres, brakes, hydraulics, guards and more. A written report is issued after every examination.

Most forklifts must be examined every 6 months. Failing to comply puts your team at risk and can result in prohibition notices, fines, or worse.
